I did my research and I knew exactly what I wanted, or so I thought.

When I found out our feed store got their first round of chicks I could not get there fast enough. I grabbed a box, loaded the kids into the car and we were off to look for the perfect new additions to our growing homestead. I was as giddy and wiggly as my kids, if not worse.

When we arrived, there they were several different troughs all lined up, chirping in the distance. As we got closer and peered into the containers, the kids eyes lit up with excitement. It was at that point I knew coming home without chicks was not an option.

My intent was to be very selective about which chicks would be moving into our home. Getting the well rounded, multi purpose, and friendly chickens I so desperately wanted. After searching through all of my options, I discovered that the breed of chicken I had chosen ever so carefully, was not on the list. This is where I probably should have left the store, looked online or placed a special order. However, as I stated before, with two wide eyed kids in tow I knew the second they laid their eyes on them, I was not leaving without sweet baby chicks.

Its not that I have ill behaved children, or that I couldn’t tell them no. If that were the case I wouldn’t have brought them with me to begin with. My logic is this. Experiences, lifestyle and learning. Yes, I definitely could have taught them many lessons by walking away, but in this case I opted to do otherwise.

In that moment, I did not see any harm in allowing my children to experience they joy of picking out several different types of chickens including a mini chicken. Yes those are a thing!! Who knew?? I thought it was much more valuable for them to make chicken selections of their own. Not only will this create wonderful memories to look back on, get them more excited to learn about all the different kinds of chickens and share that knowledge with others, but also excited to care for their special new friends, which will include planting a chicken garden.

From this one small hiccup in my homesteading plans a whole new opportunity presented itself.

So, with all 7 chicks in hand, I was off to start my newest adventure. So here is to going with the flow, lessons learned and the next batch of the correct chicks.

    1. I can’t remember the breed I have off hand I will have to find it again and let you know. Mini chickens are just that, they are primarily used for small spaces and bug control at least around here. They grow to be about half the size of the average chicken and they lay smaller eggs. It makes sense but I never realized or thought about mini chickens until we seen them in the store lol. We are working on names still but chicken little is definitely in the running 🙂

  1. Aww!! Congrats on your new brood! They sure are cute! My oldest daughter just hatched chicks in her agriculture class and is dying for us to “adopt” them…lol!🙂
