Things have been pretty busy and exciting here on the homestead.
With each passing day the chicks are getting bigger and more of a handful. They will soon be outgrowing the set up I have now. I occasionally find one strolling about the bathroom or roosting on the side of the tub. They have been a joy to watch and care for, the kids are smitten. Though after weeks of having them primarily in my bathroom, I am definitely ready to get them out in the coop. I reserved 6 baby chicks at my local store. As luck would have it they are getting in a dozen of the chickens I want! I am soo excited!
This last week we also got two baby white pekin ducks! They are already the same size as my chickens! They grow soo fast! My local store only sells them in pairs one male and one female. We have named them snow white and prince charming. While we have two ducks already, caring for baby ducks is a whole new experience as our other ducks were already fully feathered when we got them. I may look around and add a few more females so that the male ducks don’t pick on the females too much. Good news! It is getting warmer and our female duck should start producing eggs soon, she is building a nest. I have never had duck eggs and am interested to see how different they are from chicken eggs.
A few days ago, the kids and I planted a bunch of kale seeds in and around the duck/chicken pen, and in several random spots throughout the yard. Hopefully most of them make it. I did make sure to save plenty for my “official” garden I will be starting in the next couple weeks. As soon as I have some extra time I will be separating one of my mint plants into several and adding that in and around the duck/chicken pen as well. I am aware mint tends to take over the yard but I plan to keep 20 chickens/ducks in that area which should keep it at bay.
We are also going to have a very large house guest for a few weeks, which will be fun! My cousin is going out of town and their great dane Dexter will be spending some time with us. He seems to be getting along with all of our other animals quite well. So here is to our newest slobbery adventure!

They looks so cute and puffy🤗
I totally love farming because I was raised in a farm. Those are cute and ducklings ❤
Oh my gosh I’m so jealous! When I get my own place I want to be able to have a few chickens and ducks. They look so adorable and fluffy when they’re young.
