Homesteading isn’t a place it is a way of life

Imagine a world full of endless possibilities a place so magical you won’t believe it’s home.

Creating a homestead is much like staring at the blank page of a notebook and creating a story unlike anything the world has ever seen.

Everyone has different reasons to homestead and a different idea of what that looks like.

For some it is gardening, raising their own meat, or producing power.

For me it means freedom.

Its about connecting with our past, the world around us and the hopes we have for the future.

There are a million reasons to homestead

The most wonderful part is that anyone can do it.

The homestead lifestyle definitely looks a little different in an apartment than it does in a place with a yard or property.

But let me tell you a little secret, it will always be different than anything someone else is doing.

Work with what you have and take steps toward where you want to be.

Start small.

For example, get a few chickens, get meat from your local farmers, grow an indoor garden, learn new skills, or support another homesteader.

If there are not many homesteaders or local farms near you, research online companies that you can purchase from.

There are also several other benefits of homesteading including

Being Prepared

Please, take a moment to imagine what you and your family would do if you were unable to go to the grocery store.

Would you be alright?

One of the best things about homesteading is the great food!

Right now, I am fortunate enough to be able to have chickens and ducks.

Which means in the event of an emergency my family will have plenty of eggs to eat.

I also have a small avocado tree I grew from seed and a blueberry bush in my living room.

Producing even a fraction of the food you eat really makes a difference!

What would happen if your power went out?

Does the power impact water or heat in your home?

One of my goals is to produce my own power.

While, I am not there yet being aware of these issues helps me better prepare.

It also gives a new

Appreciation and Connection to the World Around Us

As a society we have become very disconnected about where food comes from and what is inside it.

Do you know where your food comes from?

No, the answer isn’t from the grocery store.

Remember those chickens and ducks I was talking about earlier?

Most people go into the store grab some eggs and go about their daily life.

Not me.

Someone has to feed/water them, collect eggs, clean the coop, and keep them safe from predators.

That’s if you are only using them for eggs.

Unfortunately, the reality of eating meat means something else will lose its life.

Producing your own food takes a lot of hard work.

You are more grateful and less likely to waste if you are the one that had to put in that work.

Producing the things you need to survive creates

Independence

I love that I am not entirely dependent upon a store to provide me with the things that I need.

Having the skill set to preserve food, cook from scratch, garden, raise animals, hunt, fish, etc. ensures that you will be ready no matter what comes your way.

With time I will be able to quit my job and produce most of the things my family needs myself.

Anything I am not producing myself I generally can find in my

Community

Most places have a crazy chicken lady, community garden or local farm. Connect with those around you.

They will become great friends and a wonderful resource for you.

Share your reasons to homestead, let your friends know what you are doing and help them if they are interested.

If you have excess, barter with others for other items that you need or help someone less fortunate.

We are all in this together

Life is short create something magical.

  1. Hey Summer! Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it! Keeping animals out is a real challenge. I fought ground squirrels last year. Unfortunately, I do don’t have much experience uprooting big plants and moving them. I would consider growing them from seeds and keeping it in a container from the beginning. If you are looking to get blueberries right away I would purchase one or two from a nursery. I know it is rough especially because you already have some but it is probably going to be cheaper than trying to keep the bears out 🙁
